2016 QuantNet Rankings of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

That's a great point but the focus on tuition here may be (dare I say it) intentional. When US News does their college rankings table, they include things like acceptance rate, and enrollment class size numbers along with tuition. Here, tuition is clearly the most important thing. That's...

    Becoming a "capital quant"

@GoIllini Sorry, I was wrong. There are no income limits on Traditional IRA contributions, but there is an income limit on the ability to take a tax deductions from a contribution. Having read many of your posts on WSO, I should have known better than to question your personal finance wisdom...

    Becoming a "capital quant"

@GoIllini I agree with your advice generally, but the bit about IRA is not entirely true. You're right about the income threshold for Roth IRA, but Traditional IRA contribution is still possible up to $5,500 p.a. and this avoids the headache involved in a 401k rollover (i.e. a fair amount of...

Why a Masters in Finance Won't Make You a Quant Trader

http://www.quantstart.com/articles/Why-a-Masters-in-Finance-Wont-Make-You-a-Quant-Trader Mike's argument makes a lot of sense to me. Quant funds hire candidates who can perform independent research, not simply regurgitate well-known methods within the quant trading community. The best way to...

Very thoughtful and well written post @yatici. I really feel anyone considering doing MFE programs or currently in the programs should read it.

NYU Math Finance vs Columbia Math Finance

If you have any questions about the NYU program as part-time, feel free to PM me. Unfortunately, I don't know all that much about Columbia's Math Finance program, so I can't say one is better than the other for your situation.

    NYU Math Finance (Part-Time)

I don't think the average GRE score for part-time students has ever been made publicly available. Given the lack of information, I would use their full-time score as a baseline. For part-time admissions, as long as you have taken the minimum math courses outlined on their website...

I am not too familiar with the NYU-Poly MSFE program, but given that you also mentioned they "hire folks from math background", did you mean NYU MSFM?

COMPARE NYU MSMF vs Stanford MS Stats

I was in the same boat as you guys last year, ultimately picking NYU over MIT even after putting in a deposit with them. MIT had over enrolled their class, so I got my money back without any problem. They may refund your deposit too if you ask nicely. If you want to go into quant finance, go...

2011-2012 Quantnet Ranking of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

Andy, it seems to me that most of the criticisms on the rankings are related to your ties with Baruch, specifically whether the factor weights are truly unbiased or if they have a pro-Baruch tilt. I think the only way to get rid of this conflict of interest issue is to hand some of the...

Expected values are 15.1667, 12.25, and 14.1296 respectively, but intuitively look for the one more likely to get a product of two large numbers.

2011-2012 Quantnet Ranking of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

Just to clarify my request, I wasn't asking to see any of the numbers that the schools provided - rather I am more interested in seeing the final tallies, which Andy used to rank the programs. I think it would be useful to see if say the top X programs are all within a close range, and then...

2011-2012 Quantnet Ranking of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

But that doesn't preclude him from releasing the aggregate scores for each program... can you explain why Andy is not responding to my request for aggregate score disclosure? US News grad program rankings are scaled 5.0 to 0. Is it too unreasonable to ask for the same here? Edit: Thanks Andy...

2011-2012 Quantnet Ranking of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

I think the risk of conflict of interest is pretty obvious... alumni have incentive to promote their alma mater, no matter how many years ago they attended the school. If their degree goes from second tier first tier then they obviously do benefit from that if nothing else then prestige. I don't...

2011-2012 Quantnet Ranking of Financial Engineering (MFE) Programs

I think the ranking methodology is much better than the 2009 version. Thanks, Andy for putting this together. In terms of transparency, would it be too much trouble to re-index the top program's score to 100 and work down from there? That way we can see what the separation is between each...

Guess the new 2011 MFE rankings!!

Lin, I think these rankings are pretty close. But I would add Stanford ahead of UCB and Princeton at #2 or #3. If we're trying to predict rankings, we shouldn't exclude less quant oriented programs that will show up in the actual rankings.

    CFA Thread

I just passed all three levels, all on the first try. I would highly recommend getting the Kaplan Schweser books because they save you time and the extra practice exams were probably the single most useful thing to have. Also I took NYSSA classes, but they were useful in L1, less so in L2, and...

COMPARE TOP 3 MFE programs in terms of Placement?

Having read many, many of the posts here for over a year now, I definitely would agree with that assessment. I feel QuantNet has a pro-Baruch spin because so many of its active members (admin included) are Baruch alums or students. It makes sense for alums to defend their decision to attend...

CFA + MBA OR MS Quant + MBA

When you register for CFA, they provide you with all of the books you need. The cost is already included in the registration price . If you want to get supplemental books as well as some practice exams, I highly suggest getting the Kaplan Schweser Notes, which I think costs another $350...

NYU MSMF NYU Part-time "placement" question

Roni, NYU's part time program is the exact same as full time as far as taking classes goes, but there are no placement services. The full time program is the harder one to get into and so their policy is: you can switch from full time to part time at any time, but not the other way around.

    Part-Time MFE/MSCF/MSF in New York

Maverick, these top quant programs all have their strengths and weaknesses. It really depends on what you're looking for. I've noticed this forum has a slight pro-Baruch bias, so here's my completely unbiased opinion: Disclaimer: I will be attending NYU part-time this fall. Baruch MFE -...

@kmisha, Re NYU Admission: my application was part-time initially, but changed it to full-time when I found out that people who get accepted to full-time can always transfer to part-time. "MFE program profile evaluation" master thread

Hi, I made a post last week inquiring about my chances of getting into some of the top MFE programs. I guess just to add some questions on top of that: 1) Should I be worried that a 3.6 GPA might hurt my chances of getting in? 2) Will it be easier to get into a part-time program at NYU or...
