  1. Good econometrics book ?

Agree for introductoty. If you would like a deeper look and understanding after a few econometric courses, look into "Econometric Analysis" by Greene.
  2. COMPARE Columbia MFE & MSOR Inquiry

Thank you for the replies. That answers my question.
  3. COMPARE Columbia MFE & MSOR Inquiry

They don't pick up their phone.
  4. COMPARE Columbia MFE & MSOR Inquiry

I did some searching and could not find an answer. It is a rather simple question. It seems most people are applying to Columbia are interested in the MFE or MSOR with FE concentration. I am interested in financial engineering as well as operations research and quantitative methods to improve...
  5. Santas at Christmas party

    is the solution unique?
  6. Stanford Undergrad and masters

Look at US News and World College Rankings. This is very general, you should probably post what you want to go to Stanford for, and this is kind of like asking what have you heard of Harvard, I mean sounds like a rhetorical question almost.
  7. Class in C++

Take numerical analysis and then if you decide later you need a C++ class, take the Baruch C++ for FE class that will start being offered in September. It is much easier to find a C++ class to take after graduation than to find a numerical analysis class to take after graduation. I doubt any...
  8. Academic Research

Do you have any econometrics? That would help if you are to conduct an empirical study.
  9. Baruch MFE Baruch Pre-MFE Questions...

Hi, if you do a search (maybe for for math courses) you'll find the math courses suggested for admission. In addition, if you search different programs (UCB, Columbia, NYU, UCLA, etc.) they normally give a list of courses they feel are more or less required for admissions. It always says...
  10. Real analysis?

I know what you mean, I would take it. You should also consider that if your plans change and you end up wanting to do a PhD in something quantitative (math, econ, etc.), real analysis is required.
  11. A Dialogue Concerning Two Rating Systems

Enjoyed this very much. Not sure I understand the pun at the end. I mean, I know what EBITDA is, but seems like shes going for a double meaning? What is the double meaning? It hints at being something, shall we say "dirty" :D
  12. Real analysis?

If you claim to have studied mathematics at the undergraduate level, then I think any quantitative graduate program would expect that you have taken real analysis. While it is not useful in practical applications such as mathematical finance, it strengthens your problem solving skills. So I...
  13. Calling all Business Undergrads

You could also try searching the profiles of current mfe/math finance students. I know NYU has detailed profiles of their current students for the MSMF. Just a thought.
  14. CFA Thread

All sounds like good advice. I do like the depth of content in the CFAI books. I think I will go ahead and get some Schweser materials...notes, practice exams, question bank. Might be cheaper to get one of the packages I think.
  15. Course Selection

Yea, numerical analysis will probably include matlab use too, which is good. I really liked real analysis....proofs are completely useless in the real world but it shapes the way you think and approach problems.
  16. Course Selection

if you already took that upper level linear algebra course then I would not take another. You have probably already taken at least two right? Real analysis or Numerical Analysis would be my choices..
  17. CFA Thread

Yea, I have the books and started studying for June 2012 this month. I'm thinking of buying Kaplan Schweser material.
  18. CFA Thread

Hi Darth, you did not use any supplemental material such as Kaplan Schweser or Stalla? you only used the books provided by CFA institute upon registering?
  19. CFA Thread

Hi everyone, I'm curious how many people are going to sit for the CFA examination this year and next year. Anyone for L1 Dec 2011? L1, L2, L3 June 2012? Does anyone currently have the CFA designation. Also, for people who have taken and passed (or not passed) either level, would you like to...
  20. Earthquake

    Arlington, VA...felt.
  21. C++ online certificate for MFE applicants

Thanks for the response Andy. I guess I have some thinking to do. I'd like for the course content to be fresh when I apply to programs but I also want to gain the knowledge as soon as possible. I am currently in the industry and do not plan to apply for 3 years because I would like to complete...
  22. C++ online certificate for MFE applicants

Just read page 1-10 and this course sounds awesome. After completing undergrad, I regret somewhat leaving the computer science major to pursue economics and mathematics, since computer science seems so essential now in QF. My programming experience is Matlab, VBA, and some Java. Of course, it is...
  23. "MFE program profile evaluation" master thread

Apologies, I posted a thread before called "Economics Undergrad and Math Finance Programs" I believe this thread is more appropriate to post this in. Can someone tell me how to delete threads I create? Thank you. Hi everyone, It has been a while since I posted here. After reading through a...
  24. Short term + Long term career goals

Katherine, It depends what kind of PhD you want to get. In general, work experience wont help your PhD application unless its research and directly related to the PhD youre applying for. And some schools may even frown upon the fact that you have been out of academia for so long.
  25. Abstract Linear Algebra vs Real Analysis

thanks guys, yea i figured the linear algebra course would look redundant. It just seemed that maybe takin PDE and real analysis along with an undergraduate thesis, math econ course, and risk & uncertainty course would be quite a workload for my last semester in college, but hey thats what hard...
  26. Abstract Linear Algebra vs Real Analysis

Hey guys, I wanted some advice on which theory class I should take. I am an undergraduate Economics major with a minor in mathematics. My math coursework has been calc 1,2,3, statistics, linear algebra, ordinary differential equations, applications of linear algebra, and probability theory. I...
  27. Last year undergrad

Hey guys, I need some advice. I am entering my final year as undergrad having majored in Economics and minored in Mathematics. My GPA is currently 3.4 and hopefully will be up to 3.5 pending my results from this semester, and then hopefuly raise it more in my final year. I am writing this email...
  28. Career path, Please help

get a minor in math. If you still can, change to regular finance or economics.
  29. Courses taken/should take

Yea actually John O'Brien from UCB mentioned at an info session that he recommends getting CFA L1 to have an edge against other applicants since most do not have specific finance experience. I forgot to mention I have also taken financial accounting. My financial courses on transcript would...
  30. Courses taken/should take

Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum. I am currently a junior at the University of Maryland majoring in Economics with a minor in mathematics. I am thinking about doing a Master in financial engineering. My top choices are Columbia and Berkeley. What I like about Columbia though is the option to do...
