Hi ,
I am mechanical engg from india and have my masters finished in mechanical design . I came into contact with a friend doing mfe from ann arbor and got seriously inspired into finance. I am working as a college professor in an engineering college for past 4 yrs and working at the position of INVESTMENT AND RISK ADVISOR in a small finance boutique just to improve my profile . I have a GMAT of 680(49 Q , 34 V , 4 AWA) and am looking fwd to getting admission into mfe . i have the follwoing academic score

10th 78 5
12th 86%
B.E 7.16/10
M-Tech 7/10

i have grades C, B, B in Maths and B in C- programming in graduation. My dissertaion for msters was a simulation program based completely in MATLAB.

I dnt think my acads are good enough to get me into top 20 schools (are they ? ) what other schools are ranked high after the 22 schools in the mfe ranking ? What chances do i have of getting into one of the 22 schools ranked on the site ?

pls help

I would say based on Ire/UK college system the grades are fine as long as they are above 70%. I did an MFE and most of my class weren't stars - usually CS grads with 1 or 2 that even had arts degrees with a bit of math. However MFE is now moved since those days in 2003 when I used to get asked if it was an accountancy qualification!

Having said that my question is why MFE? I had a trader friend in a similar situation ask me about MFE he chose to not spend money learning about something he was working in. I'd keep my money and develop with the boutique and stay away from banks, as they tend to shy away unless the ONLY job you've ever had is banking related. MFE might act like MS Certs do for IT, but it will limit your options, not expand them as MFE is renowned for giving grads a small range of (albeit highly paid) very stressful jobs to choose from. Even with a bit of experience in industry this is something that's very hard to get around. You're friend will no doubt have not seen this as it takes 5-6 yrs experience to fulky appreciate this and many grads are licky enough to get jobs through it and usually pass on flawed info that it's a meal ticket - it's far from it. Stick with the boutique and develop there and don't leave lecturing until you're secure in finance (if possible)

hi liam...thanks for the insight . well the job i am dng is just for name sake , i dnt have any responsibilities and i am nt learning much . in india i cant get a proper fin job without a proper fin degree and then too its tough . i need a career shift and i need to get a degree from a reputed college. i had also thought of mba bt the high tuition cost is a constrain..and master in finance is pobably for those wanting to pursue phd later on ...thts y i thought of mfe. well big money is never easy and i wouldnt mind working hard . having said that , i have no clue about wt an actual mfe job.is...and whether the money.is worth the labor on job. bt somehow tht doesnt bother me....i definately need a shift to finance and i dnt see other options better then an mfe from a reputed institute....pls comment
