I am considering applying at some MFE schools. I am trying to determine what additional education / certifications / experience I may need to get into a top school like Baruch.

I have a few BS degrees with a 4.0 GPA (yes, I know, multiple degrees can hurt me because it may seem like I don't want to commit to a certain field), top GRE scores, but no work experience in finance and no certifications. I took the pre-MFE courses at Berkeley a few years ago, but that didn't seem to help. After being rejected, they recommended that I sit for at least the CFA Level I. However, I suspect even that isn't enough. So, I haven't tried going down the CFA route, and I haven't been doing anything to improve my profile since then.

If I were to go down the CFA route, what level is recommended?

And, would it be advisable to get a different MS or a PhD prior to applying to an MFE program?
